Joao AGUIAR MACHADO
Director General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, European Commission
J. Aguiar Machado is in charge of implementing the EU Common Fisheries Policy and promoting an integral approach to the EU Maritime Policy. Before taking up his current position, Mr Aguiar Machado was Director General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission. Between 2009 and 2014, Mr Aguiar Machado was Deputy Director General at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade. He was responsible for bilateral trade relations with Asia, Latin America and Africa, including many of the EU’s free trade negotiations, and for trade in services, investment, intellectual property and public procurement. From September 2007 to December 2008, he was Deputy Director-General at the EC’s Directorate-General for External Relations – where he was in charge of coordinating overall EU relations with Asia and Latin America. Mr Aguiar Machado spent most of his career working on trade matters in Brussels and in EC Delegations in both Tokyo, Japan (1989 – 1994), and Geneva, Switzerland (WTO, 1994 – 1998). Mr Aguiar Machado studied economics both in Lisbon and at the College of Europe in Bruges.
Lord Mayor of Cork
Mick worked as a journalist for 10 years at local, national and then at international level as Deputy Editor of the Irish Echo, Australia. He has also worked as a parliamentary secretary in the national parliament (Dail Eireann) and spent 15 years working with students providing transitional support from primary through to tertiary education. He currently works as a Cork ETB Youth Officer.
He was first elected to Cork City Council in 2009, topped the poll at the 2014 elections and in 2018 became the first non-party Lord Mayor of the city in 73 years.
Mick is involved with several charities including Pieta House and the Hope Foundation, is on the board of directors of several schools as well as UCC and Cork Opera House. His father was a member of Cork Harbour Commissioners.
He has a keen passion for sport, especially Gaelic Games, and is a regular concert-goer...he has one of the largest Sinatra collections in Ireland!
General Director for Economy and Innovation in the Lisbon City Council
Ana Margarida Figueiredo is currently the General Director for Economy and Innovation in the Lisbon City Council. She is responsible for the areas of Economy/Investment, Entrepreneurship, Innovation/Knowledge, Strategic Clusters and Employment in the City Council.
In the area of entrepreneurship she was responsible for the launch of a business incubator – STARTUP LISBOA, for the platform of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Lisbon – MADE OF LISBOA and for the LISBOA EMPREENDE - a responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship program, created by the Lisbon City Council and with other public and private organizations, to increase city's economy by supporting the creation of small businesses.
She also played Chief Financial Officer functions in URBAFRICA and UCCLA – non-governmental organizations for Cooperation and Development of the Countries of Portuguese official language.
